Originally mounted in New York City in November 2019 in Chelsea, Manhattan,
SILENCE was be presented as a total of 36 hours over the course of 3 days on July 1,2 and 3.
The formatting of SILENCE involves Boycott sitting in complete silence and still movement from 8am-8pm with no breaks. “The first question everyone always asks when they hear about SILENCE is ‘What about going to the bathroom?’ “Boycott remarks, “From 8am-8pm, 12 hours a day there are no breaks. I sit across from an empty chair in complete silence and as close to complete stillness as I can manage. There are no breaks for the full 12 hours, for all three days. Not for eating snacks, drinking water or bathroom breaks. Anyone who comes during those hours is welcome to sit across from me in the empty chair for as long as they want or need and leave whenever they want or need.
All formatting for SILENCE was inspired by Marina Abramovics: The Artist Is Present ”
Continuing, Boycott says,” But, that 12 hours for me with a mask are
nothing to what essential workers have had to and are continuing to go though during this pandemic. The pain that a body feels from 12 hours without movement are nothing compared to the physical pain and suffering that so many members of our community in Fremont County as well as my people back in NYC have felt while physically, mentally and emotionally felt while fighting for their lives with COVID-19. 12 hours of silence a day are nothing compared to the centuries of silence and complacency of privileged people who could have spoken up instead of actively benefitting from the pain of other people.” . |
